Experience an evocative journey through the music of Franz Schubert with Happy Dog Duo, as they present Schubert: From Light into Darkness. This concert explores the dramatic contrasts in Schubert's 4-hands piano repertoire, from light-hearted playfulness to profound, brooding intensity.
The concert opens with the charming Deux Marches Caractéristiques, D. 968b. These two joyful and spirited marches set a playful tone, filled with a lively character that invites the audience into Schubert's more whimsical side.
As the program progresses, the mood deepens with Schubert's Sonata in B-flat Major, D. 617, a work that combines lyrical elegance with subtle emotional depth, offering a perfect middle ground in the journey from light to darkness.
The performance culminates with the Fantasy in F minor, D. 940. This powerful work plunges into the darker, more brooding side of Schubert. It closes the concert with a stirring sense of finality and emotional complexity.

Happy Dog Duo---pianists Eric Tran and Nathan Cheung---have performed four-hands classics, originals, and transcriptions for two decades, with a focus on bringing humor and joy to the classical music world. Their performances have taken them to Canada, Korea, China, and 20 US states, and they have appeared on Aspen Public Radio, WQXR, and NPR. Recent invitations include guest artist performances at Stanford University, the Chautauqua Institution, and the National Federation of Music Clubs Convention.
They won the 1st prize and Abild American Music Award at the Ellis Duo-Piano Competition, hosted by the National Federation of Music Clubs; 1st prize at the MTNA-Stecher and Horowitz Two Piano Competition; and 1st prize at the Ohio International Duet and Duo Piano Competition. They are among the few piano duos who have performed on the only Pleyel Double Grand piano in the Western Hemisphere. Performances with orchestra include the Stanford Symphony Orchestra, Diablo Symphony Orchestra, Vallejo Symphony, and the Pittsburg Piano Festival Orchestra.
Outside of music, they both enjoy solving puzzles, watching Japanese cartoons, and frantically scribbling life plans on whiteboards.
