TOPIC: While on his deathbed Plato was asked to summarize his great work, the Dialogues, in one statement. His reply: "Practice dying." Today most people do not want to talk about dying, let alone practice it. Our American culture fears death and sees it as the enemy, rather than a natural part of life. There are two levels of dying: The big and the little. Every day we die a hundred little deaths in losses, in failures, in longing and rejections. We die with every separation and letting go. The little dying is similar to the big dying in terms of process. When we learn to let go and experience the little deaths, it will be easier to let go during the big death.

SPEAKER: Janet Chatwin, a native of Salt Lake City, is a former elementary school teacher from Jordan School District. In 2000 Janet left teaching in order to begin graduate school. In 2006 she completed her Ph.D. in Mythological Studies with an emphasis in Depth Psychology at Pacifica Gratitude Institute in Santa Barbara. While living in Santa Barbara, she received training in Hospice Patient Care and became a volunteer. She now lives part time in Seattle and part time in Salt Lake City where she facilitates workshops during the summer months at her mountain cabin near Oakley, Utah.
