Broughton Hall Estate Site Visit (BHS Pennines Evening Event)

The BHS Pennines committee would like to invite you for an evening stroll around the Broughton Hall estate to see existing natural flood management features and hear about future plans and wider links to the River Aire catchment. This will be followed by food and networking back at the JBA Consulting office.

Around a third of 3,000-acre Broughton Sanctuary is being returned to nature to help visitors reconnect with the wild environment and boost the areas biodiversity. Intensive sheep grazing is being reduced, peat bogs and waterways are being restored and tens of thousands of newly planted saplings will boost tree cover from 6% to over 20%. It has been named as one of National Geographics 30 coolest destinations in the world for 2024!

Meet our speakers:

Broughton Sanctuary. A representative from Broughton Sanctuary will introduce the estate's vision for rewilding.

Emma Wren, Mott McDonald, Technical Director for Nature Based Solutions and Natural Flood Management Lead. Co-author of the CIRIA Natural Flood Management Manual and involvement in a range of projects in the UK, including the largest NFM programme in England to reduce flood risk in Leeds.

Angie McKinney, JBA Consulting, Technical Director. A chartered Civil Engineer, specialising in environmental engineering and river restoration, and leading initiatives to embed good carbon and sustainability in design. She led the design of natural flood management intervention on the Broughton Sanctuary.
