Tour of the Orange County Great Park Rise Park, an AIAOC Framework for Design Excellence Award Winner By Studio One Eleven
A 2022 AIAOC Framework for Design Excellence winner, this course will explore how this series of parks as part of a larger trail ecosystem responded to the following principals: Design for Integration, Design for Well-Being, and Design for Ecosystems, while also reducing embodied carbon, reduced construction costs and construction activities.

1. Design for Integration: The site had a unique topographical challenge that provided a barrier to accessibility throughout all program elements. Attendees will experience how accessibility for equitable use by all visitors became the driver of the design concept to engage the senses, connect people to place, and organize the park program elements with other responses to the Framework for Design Excellence.

2.Design for Well-Being: Attendees will experience how all three segments of the park connect people with place and nature, and encourage different degrees of understanding and engagement with the unique local environment to create a healthier lifestyle for its users: The Profound Sanctuary (mind) encourages self-reflection in a natural environment, Majestic Garden (body) is about physical activity in the natural environment, and the Overlook (mind) is about contemplating the natural environment.

3.Design for Ecosystems: Attendees will learn how Rise Park is one of a series of parks that are part of a regional trail ecosystem, tying all of the Great Park Neighborhoods together to encourage equitable access by walking, biking, and other modes of mobility for people of all ages and physical abilities to experience the restoration of native landscape and habitat, and awareness of the park's healthy connection to the regional ecosystem.

4.Sustainability: Attendees will learn how the Architect worked closely with the Client to optimize their program creating a flexible design and changeable space that significantly reduced the amount of built form and conditioned space, thereby reducing embodied carbon, creating a healthier environment for its users, reduced construction costs, and the duration of construction activities.
