Tour of the Environmental Nature Center and Environmental Nature Center Preschool
This course will explore how to design LEED Platinum; Living Building Challenge Petal Certified; Zero Net Carbon Design (ZNCD) buildings including the use of natural and carbon positive materials, methods for reducing energy and water consumption, and creating inspiring spaces for its inhabitants. The ENC Preschool was the recipient of the AIA C.O.T.E. Award, AIA OC Citation Award, USGBC Project of the Year Award, and the ASLA Award of Honor. The Environmental Nature Center also received the AIAOC Honor Award, the ASLASC Quality of Life Award, and the USGBC Most Sustainable NGO Award.

The tour qualifies for 1.5 AIA HSW learning units and 1.5 ZNCD continuing education credits for California licensure.

Learning Objectives:  

Learning Objective1:
Attendees will learn how to design a zero net energy building and how to design for the AIA 2030 commitment to create healthier interior and exterior environments for campus users.

Learning Objective2:
Attendees will learn about third party verified sustainable materials and products that have improved environmental life cycles to create healthier environments for the building inhabitants.

Learning Objective3:
Attendees will learn about energy and water conservation strategies in both building and landscape design and operation.

Learning Objective4:
Attendees will learn how to utilize natural light and airflow to create healthier interior environments for building inhabitants.

Learning Objective5:
Attendees will learn about site design strategies used to create interactive outdoor early childhood education spaces to complement the interior classroom spaces.

Presenters:

Rick DAmato, FAIA
LPA Design Director Rick DAmato is an award-winning architect and member of the AIA College of Fellows.  Rick is a nationally recognized leader in sustainable environments that improve human health. His portfolio of net-zero energy buildings includes the AIA COTE Top Ten + Award-winning ENC Preschool, the Environmental Nature Center, Pretend City Childrens Museum and RiverRock Headquarters. His work focuses on blending passive and active design strategies, using an informed approach to healthy materials and aligning ecological and social responsibility with client goals.

As Design Director, he is responsible for the design of many project types recognized for their carbon reduction and COTE awards.  These projects that exceed sustainable building standards include nature centers, libraries, education facilities, fire stations, and corporate headquarters. He has created exciting workplace and public environments for many notable clients, including the cities of West Hollywood and Long Beach, ASICS, Volcom and DPR Construction.


Jeremy Hart, AIA
As Director of Civic + Cultural at LPA, Jeremy Hart designs with discovery and impact in mind. With more than 20 years of experience, he believes that the direction of design should reflect the will of the community.  Jeremy is driven by the desire to create and influence our environment in a meaningful way. He asserts that architects ability to create environmentally conscious impressions on people can influence a community, interactions, and the health of the surrounding environment.


Jeremy has contributed to numerous COTE award-winning and sustainably designed projects, including net-zero energy projects for the Moorpark City Library and Pretend City Childrens Museum. His sustainable design approach is deeply rooted in place, relying on the unique environmental conditions of the site and a collaboratively built understanding of the community to shape the functional, experiential and high-performance aspects of each project.
