The AIAOC EDI Committee Presents:

TAKING INCLUSIVE RESTROOMS FROM IF TO HOW - Studying Project Implications of Inclusive Restroom Systems in Practice

The course will review the practical considerations and project constraints of implementing inclusive restrooms as they compare to conventions of design for gendered restrooms.  The comparison is developed through 6 lenses of analysis: accessibility, cost, equity & inclusion, maintenance, privacy, and safety utilizing an iterative design process. Cost estimation, community data collection, and historical analysis of restrooms will further be discussed to understand how inclusive restrooms can be integrated within public facilities.

1.Attendees will learn how to incorporate accessible design into inclusive restrooms.

2.Attendees will learn about the design of mechanical in inclusive restrooms as compared to gendered restrooms to create healthy environments for the end user.

3.Attendees will learn how nation research and qualitative information is utilized to substantiate design choices based in health, safety, and welfare for building occupants.

4.Attendees will learn how the variety of inclusive restroom design options can create healthier buildings for the occupants and patrons.

Presenters:

Michael C. Ralph (he/him) is a Vice President and the Director of Research with Multistudio. He earned a PhD in the Department of Educational Psychology at the University of Kansas, and he uses his background as both a K-12 and higher education instructor to connect research to issues of practice and experience in classrooms, with a focus on equitable application of quantitative methods as a tool for improved teaching and dismantling barriers to success for historically marginalized groups.

Joshua Kehl (he/they) is a Senior Associate and architectural designer working within the San Francisco Multistudio office.  He earned a Masters of Architecture at the University of Michigan and a Bachelors of Arts in in Architecture from Clemson University.  He works on K-12, higher education, public space, and multi-family, mixed-use tower projects.  He designs through a lens of equity and civic & environmental sustainability including methods to track and remove Red List chemicals from interior building materials.
