Funky Friday!
Pawn Shop Soul returns to Kuumbwa Jazz to headline a soulsational Funky Friday! The floor will be cleared for dancers ready to get their freak on with the best live funk and soul in Santa Cruz. First up is a local sophisto-funk favorite, Hoopty. These neo-vintage funksters pay respects to funk grooves of all types with a style uniquely their own sure to heat up the dance floor. After a short cool off, Pawn Shop Soul will take over with horn-driven, organ-sweetened, instrumental soul and funk grooves to shake your soul and your booty! Nine pieces strong, Pawn Shop Soul is not just a dance band, it's an out-of-body soul experience.
About Pawn Shop Soul Pawn Shop Soul reclaims hawked sixties and seventies soul and funk tunes - some that cashed in and some forgotten grooves - blows out the dust and raises the roof. Tight and punchy, the Pawn Shop Horns front the band. Two trumpets on top, tenor mellowing the middle and funked up with bari sax scoops. Relieving the horns, Hammond organ steps out of the groove to testify in that unmistakable voice of the times. The guitar, bass, drums, and congas are the shopkeepers, keeping the power on, taking care business, ready to blaze when the spotlight falls on them. Nine players playing to the nines for lovers of soul and funk music. The pawn shop jukebox is stacked with hip shakin' booty bumpin' tunes from the houses of Stax, Fame, Muscle Shoals, Chess, and many others. Grooves from the likes of the Mar-Keys and the Bar-kays are on the selector next to tunes written or recorded by artists such as by Eddie Harris, Clarence Wheeler, Jack McDuff, Willie Bobo, and Mongo Santamaria. Whether an overlooked soul instrumental from the Northern Soul songbook, a deep funk fugitive from fame, or soul inspired Cuban groove, each issues a siren call to shake it! No ordinary cover band, Pawn Shop Soul brings back heat of soul and funk's golden age for a live experience not to be forgotten.
Members are: Joaquin Spengemann drums, Stephen Rogers bass guitar, Mike Spooner percussion, Lars Wright guitar, Josh Mann Hammond organ, Michael McPheeters tumpet, Daniel Miltz trumpet, Yves Tan tenor sax, and Steven Baird bari sax.
About Hoopty Since the dawn of funkilazation, humaloids have expressed themselves through rhythm; beating sticks, skins, and chests in syncopated ecstasy: shaking their butts to the funky result. From the Zulu to the Mahavishnu, from the Mothership to Maceo, Hoopty respects the lineage of funkespians and offers up its own kinky contribution. For Hoopty the groove is preeminent, reigning funky sovereign above all other freaky factors. Hoopty lays down the Boom Thwack first, infuses it with some Uhm Ahh Boom Boom Who Ha, sprinkles on some Bow Chicka Wow, and then schmears some Be Bop Bap Beep Diddly Uhm Thwap on top of it. The result is an intoxicating elixir of 98 proof instrumental funk, sure to get the funkalites dancing and the funkadudes exclaiming, "Ah Yeah."
