ABOUT the PROGRAM

As the Habsburg capital of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, Vienna enjoyed the cultural grandeur of its powerful rulers.  At the end of Hapsburg era, Fin-de-siècle Vienna became a unique historico-cultural nexus, from which many fundamental intellectual and artistic impulses for the modern Western world originated.  Within the vibrant metropolitan life of the city, often in the cafés of Vienna, the cultural elitephilosophers, painters, composers, architects, writers and psychologistsgathered to voice opinions, debate ideas, and form schools of thought.  The modern quest of the Secessionist artistsGustav Klimt, Egon Schiele, and Oskar Kokoschkato explore eroticism and the dark unconsciousness, was reflected in Sigmund Freud's psychoanalytical theories, resulting in Vienna being named the "City of Dreams."   Commemorating suchcultural rapture, the enCANTA musical celebration of Vienna promises to be rich and enchanting.

The program starts with a collection of Wienerlieder by Korngold, Berg, Webern, Schubert, Zemlinsky, Marx, Krenek, Franz Schreker, Franz Lehár, Robert Stolz and Rudolf Sieczyński; followed by Berg's aphoristic but intensely expressive Vier Stücke, op. 5 for clarinet and piano. Kreisler's Lisa, adapted by Ronald Hanmer, is a rarely performed operetta, loosely based on the true story of the romance between the young Emperor Franz Josef of Austria and Princess Elizabeth of Bavaria.   Lisa includes the famed dreamy melodies Kreisler composed for violinAlte-Wiener Tanzweisen: Liebesfreud, Liebesleid and Schön Rosemarin, and Caprice viennois, that violinist David Marks renders with lush Viennese flavor.  Director Chait captures the subtlety of humor and pathos, creating this charming stage treat which cannot be missed.
