Wide Angle Lunches - Callie Shell - "Political Landscapes: Photographic Paths to the White House"
As Time magazine's photographer covering the Kerry campaign in 2004, Callie Shell encountered a new face on the trail: little-known Illinois senator, Barack Obama. His charisma, warmth and humor drew her lens; it didn't hurt that he was standing in much better light than Senator Kerry. Fast forward four years and it was Obama's presidential campaign Shell would be documenting for Time. In so doing Shell produced a series of iconic images that have become part of our collective national memory. One of them won Shell the 2009 World Press Award for picture story of People in the News.
Before joining Time, Shell served the entire eight years of the Clinton/Gore White House as the official photographer for Vice President Al Gore. Prior to that, she was a staff photographer at The Pittsburgh Press, USA Today and the Nashville Tennessean. Shell has exhibited at the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, the Los Angeles Library, the Manchester Craftsmen's Guild in Pittsburgh, Pa., Visa pour L'Image in Perpignan, France and the Leica Gallery in New York. She lives on Sullivan's Island with her husband, National Geographic photographer Vincent J. Musi, and their son Hunter.
