TICKETS NOW AVAILABLE AT THE DOOR - The Verdi Chorus presents "AMORE ITALIANO"
The Verdi Chorus takes great pride in the announcement of its 31st season and the pair of upcoming spring concerts on Saturday, May 3rd and Sunday, May 4th. "AMORE ITALIANO" under the guidance of our Artistic Director, Anne Marie Ketchum, we are anticipating will build upon last years performances, which were our most celebrated to date.

An all-Italian program is planned with arias and ensembles from some of the greatest works ever written for the lyric stage with composers ranging from Donizetti to Leoncavallo, late works from the Puccini canon and, of course, our beloved Verdi.

We are especially pleased to present a glittering trio of soloists and announce the debut with the Verdi Chorus of Soprano Amanda Squitieri. Hailed by Opera News as, "One of the most engaging singers of the younger generation," and an alumna of Washington National Opera's Domingo-Cafritz Young Artist Program, Ms. Squitieri has enjoyed a very successful relationship with the company in our nation's capital, including performances as Mozart's Susanna in Le Nozze di Figaro and Zerlina in Don Giovanni conducted by Plácido Domingo. Her most recent triumph was creating the role of Beatrice Russo in the world premiere of Daniel Catan's Il Postino with Los Angeles Opera which lead to performances in Vienna and Paris. She was lauded by the New York Times for her "sensuously lyric soprano" and her "captivating presence." A versatile artist, Ms. Squitieri has also appeared as Anne in Stephen Sondheim's A Little Night Music with the prestigious Opera Theatre of St. Louis and debuted recently at the Teatro dell'Opera in Rome as Catherine in William Bolcolm's A View from the Bridge.

We are grateful to have rising Tenor sensation Daniel Montenegro return to the Verdi Chorus after recent triumphs that include performances in Puccini's Turandot at the Hollywood Bowl under Gustavo Dudamel and Alfredo in Verdi's La Traviata with Minnesota Opera. A graduate of the San Francisco Opera Merola Program for young artists and an Adler Fellow, he has been presented by them in his signature role of Nemorino in Donizetti's L'elisir d'amore. He also appears on the recent video release of the same composer's Lucrezia Borgia from San Francisco Opera with Renée Fleming. He has sung at the Sydney Festival in Stravinsky's demanding Oedipus Rex conducted by Joana Carniero and under the direction of Peter Sellars.  Each appearance of Mr. Montenegro with the Verdi Chorus has met with acclaim from our audience, and we are looking forward to welcoming him back. He too enjoyed a great success in the Los Angeles Opera world premiere of Il Postino and was invited to Vienna and Paris as well. We look forward to presenting him alongside his colleague Ms. Squitieri who both appeared on a recent PBS broadcast as well as on the Sony video release of Il Postino.

Metropolitan Opera Baritone Malcolm MacKenzie makes a welcome return to the Verdi Chorus after recent triumphs in the title role of Verdi's Simon Boccanegra with Kentucky Opera and the villainous Jack Rance with Virginia Opera in Puccini's La Fanciulla del West. Mr. MacKenzie is increasingly making a name for himself as a dramatic baritone and his recent performance in Verdi's Il Trovatore was complimented in Opera News for a "confident, commanding Count di Luna...of robust tone, ardent address, arching phrases and genuine baritonal squillo." Having sung with the Metropolitan Opera since his debut in 2010, Mr. MacKenzie has also performed with the Paris Opera at the Bastille, the famous Savonlinna Festival of Finland, and the New York City Opera, Washington National, Los Angeles and Glimmerglass Opera companies.

As always, we are grateful for the contribution of our magnificent accompanist, Laraine Ann Madden and the special participation of our Walter Fox Singers and section leaders.

Priority Seating is available for $40, General Admission is $30, Seniors are $25, and Students aged 25 and under with a valid ID are $10.  We look forward to seeing you at First United Methodist Church in Santa Monica, 1008 11th Street at 7:30pm on Saturday, May 3rd or 4pm Sunday, May 4th as we celebrate the glory of this magnificent music with these fine singers.

Free parking is provided across the street from the church.
