Explore Inside Ledge Lighthouse
Our Ledge Lighthouse tours have ended for the season! See you in 2024.
Come on -- climb up into the lantern room at Ledge Lighthouse! We'll take a 15-minute boat ride from the New London waterfront to reach the lighthouse in the middle of NL harbor, explore the light for about one hour, then return home.
Tour the area's lighthouses with the one who knows them best. There is every variety of lighthouse within reach of our harbor and the New London Maritime Society owns three of them! On the boat out, view nearby lighthouses and learn their stories, then land at New London Ledge Light and explore inside all the way up to the top.
Thanks to a grant from the New London Water Authority, tickets for New London public school students and their family members are just $5, each.
Be aware, landing at Ledge Light demands a little physical dexterity. You don't have to be a Ninja, but you will have to balance on the edge of a boat and step up to reach the platform. Climbing the small stair into -- and down from -- the lantern room also is challenging.
Children must be age 7 or older. Please make your reservation at least one day in advance of the trip.
Should we have to cancel the trip, due to the weather, or due to the Water Taxi service, please BE CERTAIN TO CHECK YOUR EMAIL before leaving for this trip. -- Should we need to cancel, you will be notified by email at least three hours in advance of the trip. -- We also will post it on this announcement. --
-- All visitors must wear appropriate foot ware: deck shoes or sneakers (no sandals or flip flops). You will not be allowed onboard without proper shoes.
-- Please arrive 10 minutes early. Everyone must sign a waiver of liability before getting onto the boat.
-- We MEET on at the pier behind the New London railroad station. This year we are using the Water Taxi boats for transportation. Thames River Heritage Park boats are not handicapped accessible.
-- All tours are weather dependent. Please be certain to check your email inbox prior to departing for the boat. We will notify you by email if the tour is canceled. The water taxi is a former navy utility boat open-air with no cabin and limited cover. The water temperature might make for a cool ride. It is recommended that passengers dress warmer than usual. Rain gear is recommended if the forecast calls for inclement or windy weather.
-- Food and drink, with the exception of water, are NOT permitted. For safety reasons, NO alcoholic beverages are permitted.
Payments are non-refundable unless there is a weather cancellation.
Ledge Light (1909), along with the New London Harbor Light (est. 1760, current tower 1801) and Race Rock Light Station (1878) at the opening of Long Island Sound to the ocean, create a pathway of beacons leading from the Atlantic to New London. All three lights are now owned by the New London Maritime Society. Ledge Light is preserved by our partner, the Ledge Light Foundation. Monies raised by these tours support restoration of our local lighthouses.
It's all part of our Sentinels on the Sound - 40th Anniversary of the New London Maritime Society. Go to our website nlmaritimesociety.org to find out about more events.
