SYLVIA - by A.R. Gurney

The Company kicks off 2009 with this Broadway smash hit! "Sylvia," by A.R. Gurney, is a hilarious commentary on mid-life angst, and the role pets play in our lives. Greg has met someone to help him through his mid-life crisis. She is a cute young, perky little thing. She's frisky and playful, tireless, and hangs on his every word. She's loves him unconditionally. They immediately fall for one another and Greg brings her home to meet his wife, Kate. Her name is Sylvia and she is a DOG. Kate recognizes a rival for Greg's affections and a threat to her marriage, and tries to get Greg to give Sylvia up. The parallel to a man in mid-life crisis with a lover right under his wife's nose is unmistakable and sets up a series of scenes both outrageous and a little discomfiting!!!

SMALL SPACE DOESN'T DIMINISH SYLVIA

Damian Gillen, artistic director of The Company Theatre, has a gift for making the most of very small spaces.

His staging of "Sylvia" at Orderup, a restaurant in the Collonade shopping center on the Northwest side, is a case in point. The designated playing space is teensy, but Gillen and company open it up by moving the action out into the audience, a nice touch that enhances the intimacy of the show.

The show itself is a romantic comedy in which a couple's (Gillen and the dependably strong Heather Kelley) marriage is threatened when the husband impulsively brings home a stray dog (Janelle Ross).

Ross plays Sylvia, the stray, with infectious energy. It's easy to see both why Gillen's character falls so hard for her, and why Kelley's finds her so tremendously annoying.

The cast is rounded out by Greg Hinojosa, who makes the most of three small parts: A fellow dog owner, a friend of the couple and a therapist. His portrayals are all small comic gems.

The show is well-staged and worth catching.

"Sylvia" can be seen at 8 p.m. Feb. 27 at Little Italy, 824 Afterglow. Dinner is served at 7 p.m. Tickets cost $30 in advance for dinner/show combo and $40 at the door.
