ABOUT THE LECTURE
Discover how geometry and arithmetic can interact in unexpected ways to form fractal sphere-packings from reflections in curved mirrors.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Alex Kontorovich is a Professor of Mathematics at Rutgers University, and recently held the 2020-21 Distinguished Visiting Professorship for the Public Dissemination of Mathematics at the National Museum of Mathematics (MoMath) in New York. Dr. Kontorovich came to the US at age 8 as a refugee from the former Soviet Union. He received his BA in Mathematics from Princeton, followed by a PhD in Mathematics from Columbia. Before moving to Rutgers, Dr. Kontorovich taught at Brown, Stony Brook, and Yale. In 2013, he received the American Mathematical Society's Levi Conant Prize for mathematical exposition. Other honors include an Alfred P. Sloan Research Fellowship, a Simons Foundation Fellowship, and a von Neumann Fellowship at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton. In 2017, Kontorovich became a Kavli Fellow of the National Academy of Sciences and was elected Fellow of the American Mathematical Society. He currently serves on the Scientific Advisory Board of Quanta Magazine, as Editor-in-Chief of the journal Experimental Mathematics, and as Dean of Academic Content at MoMath.
