Nashville, Tennessee, USA. Stuart was raised hearing music from his fiddler father and his guitarist uncle. He developed an eclectic taste, incorporating folk and country music as well as pop and at age 15 was playing guitar in his fathers band. While still in his teens, he formed his own band, made a few sides and also worked with some of the leading lights of country rock music, including Freddy Fender and Neil Young and he was also briefly a member of Steve Earles Dukes. During these years, he was slowly but surely making his name in Nashville as a singer-songwriter. He then became acquainted with Earles sister, Stacey Earle, and in 1992 they were married. Although she had sung backup to her brother since 1990, for a while they survived on Stuarts singing and songwriting, while she worked outside music, meanwhile raising two children from her first marriage. She was also writing songs and eventually established a solo career. Later, though, they began performing as a duo and attracted considerable attention, especially through two exceptionally good studio albums, Never Gonna Let You Go and S&M Communion Bread.
Stuarts songs, many of which are co-written with his wife, are well crafted and are sung with clarity and a clearly defined sense of time and place. The couple have their own label Gearle Records, which they formed in 1998, and on which they have released their solo and duo sessions. They have toured extensively, opening for artists such as Joan Baez, Gregg Brown, Iris DeMent and Willie Nelson, and have appeared at numerous country and folk festivals across the USA and Canada.
