Join Boston-based fiddler Katie McNally for an evening of bold and exquisite tunes bursting from the Scottish and Cape Breton traditions. The show takes place on March 29, 2014 at the Tualatin Heritage Center in Tualatin, OR and begins at 7:30 pm.

Described as "the new face of Scottish fiddling in the USA", Katie McNally grew up steeped in the vibrant Scottish and Cape Breton music community in Boston and is the 2009 New England Scottish Fiddle Champion. She was a student of Hanneke Cassel and has performed at venues such as the Freight and Salvage, Club Passim, The Barns at Wolf Trap, Symphony Space, and various folk venues throughout the country. Katie performs regularly with all-female Celtic band Long Time Courting, has been a member of the New England ddle supergroup Childsplay since 2009, and joined world-renowned Galician bagpiper Carlos Núñez on his tour of North America in 2012.

In her first tour of the Pacific Northwest, Katie will be teaming up with two of the most innovative voices in Scottish music in the US, local legend Ryan McKasson on viola and Boston-based pianist Neil Pearlman. Katie's evocative and melodic playing combined with Ryan's powerful harmonies and counterpointall anchored by Neil's rhythmically driving piano accompanimentcreates a uniquely arresting take on traditional music.

Ryan McKasson (viola)
"The bow drives across the strings, thick and throaty, creating a pulsing sound that feels more of muscle than tendon...a compositional sophistication that is cinematic, transporting, and tantalizingly modern", wrote The Boston Globe. Ryan McKasson has gained a reputation as a performer, composer, collaborator, and teacher. In 1996 he was the youngest to win the National Scottish Fiddle Championship. In 1997 he was awarded a Merit Scholarship for Viola Performance from the University of Southern California where he studied with Donald McInnes.

In 2004 Ryan and his sister, Cali, formed a band, The McKassons, that eventually included Ryan's wife, Brooke, and her brother, Matt Jerrell. The McKassons released two critically acclaimed albums, Tall Tales (2004) and Tripping Maggie(2006). Since 2002 he has also been fiddler for a renowned contra dance band, The Syncopaths. They have just released their second album, Five Gears.

Neil Pearlman (piano)
Pianist and mandolinist Neil Pearlman is rapidly distinguishing himself as a uniquely innovative artist in the contemporary traditional music scene. Called "a tremendous pianist" on BBC Radio Scotland and "a force to be reckoned with" by WGBH's Brian O'Donovan, Neil is recognized in many Celtic music circles for his unique approach to the piano. Rooted in traditional Cape Breton piano styles, Neil brings in ideas from many other genres and the result is an exciting new sound that remains true to its traditional roots. It was this fresh approach that led legendary Cape Breton fiddler Jerry Holland to say "watching Neil's hands on the piano was like watching two spiders on crack!"
