The AIA Orange County Healthcare Committee Presents ~ Webinar: HCAI Emergency Design Guide and Update
By the end of this program, participants will be able to identify specific areas of concern for multiple types of unusual occurrences that affect healthcare operations such as pandemics, wildfires and earthquakes and be able to design facilities to facilitate future flexibility.

Learning Objectives: Attendees will learn about ~

Emergency patient room ventilation conversion.
Emergency operations planning to accommodate surge capacities.
Identifying spaces that can be split into multiple zones.
HVAC considerations for handling smoke during wildfire events.
How to expedite emergency projects.
Temporary surge facilities.

Participants will also be given an opportunity to ask specific questions of HCAI and Facilities Leadership on these and other topics of concern.

Presenters:

Arash Altoontash, Ph.D., S.E.

Dr. Altoontash completed his graduate education at Stanford University in 2004 and is a registered civil and structural engineer in California. He served as an engineering consultant project manager and a part-time lecturer of structural engineering before joining HCAI (the OSHPD) in 2018. He is currently the Deputy Division Chief for Southern California, overseeing the Inspection Services, Fire Prevention, Architectural and Engineering, and Field Operations units. He enjoys listening to audiobooks in his spare time, working on his culinary skills, and exploring new recipes.

Gary Dunger

Gary Dunger is an Executive Director for Cedars-Sinai Health System, Facilities Planning, Design & Construction department, responsible for overseeing the development of Planning, Design and Construction projects for the entire Health System from inception through project close-out.  Formerly the OSHPD Business Process Manager, Chief Fire & Life Safety Office and Regional Compliance Officer, Gary has been involved with health facilities construction for 30 years.

Richard Tannahill

Richard Tannahill, Architect, is the Deputy Division Chief for Northern California and acting supervisor of the Building Standards Unit with the Department of Health Care Access and Information (HCAI). A licensed architect since 1995, he has over 30 years of architectural experience of which over 25 of that is in healthcare. Richards specialty has been in project management, building code and Construction Administration. He has been with HCAI Since April 2015 and has worked in both Plan Review and Building Standards for code writing, interpretation, and public outreach. Tannahill just finished revisions for the 2022 code cycle. He is active with the HBSB as a staff participant. He assisted in development of the Pharmacy Sterile Compounding Guidelines and new Dietary Guidelines and is currently working on a new Psychiatric Facility Guideline in cooperation with the California Department of Public Health. Tannahill is developing an Emergency Guide to design in best practices for facilities that want to proactively prepare for future emergencies. He is also on the ICC/NEHA International Pandemic Task Force.
