Tony Furtado with Matt Flinner Trio

There are a few things to be said of Tony Furtado returning to Salida this June.

First, Salida treats him well. Our audience is always enthusiastic and appreciative. His shows are always well attended; if you have seen him before, you know he is well worth seeing again. If you havent, you need to.
Second, Tony treats us well and he brings amazing talent. This show is certainly no different.

Backing Tony is The Matt Flinner Trio. Matt and his trio have been through Salida a number of times; the fact that its over many years speaks volumes to what they have created.

Matt and Tony are both award winning instrumentalist, having won the National Bluegrass Banjo Championship in Winfield, Kansas; Tony won the championship twice. Tonys musical exploration has led him to become a virtuoso on the cello-banjo, slide guitar, and baritone ukulele and has become an accomplished singer-songwriter.
Matt won the Winfield Banjo Championship only once. But the following year he took the honor playing the mandolin.

Both musicians have early roots in Bluegrass and influenced the evolution of Bluegrass, although currently neither musician limit themselves by calling themselves bluegrass musicians. Both have branched off and, in some ways, re-converged. Each helping to define the encompassing genre, Americana.

Tony and Matt preforming together is a natural. In fact, they played together in a band in the 90s called Sugarbeat, whose first gig was the Telluride Bluegrass Festival, which they won. Matts trio brings Eric Thorin on bass to the stage. Eric with his upright bass, technically and creatively, intuitively flow. Ross Martin, joining on the guitar, just might be the most understated savant of an instrument anywhere.

Although this bands make-up is a natural, I also find it a challenge because of the enormity of talent. The sum total will be truly engaging, an exhibition of mastery, virtuosity and intrigue.
