Springtime Serenades ~ An Evening with  mezzo-soprano Betany Coffland and classical guitarist Aaron Larget-Caplan

Acclaimed musicians, mezzo-soprano Betany Coffland and classical guitarist Aaron Larget-Caplan come together for a recital exploring French, Spanish, English and Chinese culture through the program: 'Passion and Thought in Song'. Inspired by the themes of love, loss and life, the duo performs music of three centuries including lute songs and a cantata by John Downland, G.F. Handel, Spanish dances by Manuel De Falla, love songs of Reynaldo Hahn and contemporary sounds of Eastern philosophies of Benjamin Britten's Song for the Chinese.

Though the repertoire is quite brilliant and the voice is a unifying element for humanity, the song recital is quite rare outside of the conservatory or connoisseur circles. Being able to introduce a sampling of music from over three centuries and four countries in a free and public recital at Natick's cultural meeting place, is an artistic necessity as our society aim to understand each other's culture, our place in the world & the maxim of Arts in public sphere. The artists will introduce each of the works and their composer.

About the Artists:

Betany Coffland, mezzo-soprano, has had her performances hailed by Opera News as "extremely fine" and "a joy to watch," and whose voice San Francisco Classical Voice has described as "plush" and "Italianate". Ms. Coffland was a Resident Artist with Opera San Jose from 2008-2012. With the company, she sang the roles of Siebel, Idamante, Rosina, Angelina, Cherubino, Dorabella, Olga, Carmen, and Elle in Poulenc's La Voix Humaine.

A graduate from The Juilliard School and New England Conservatory of Music, she received the Bori Grant for foreign music study in the Czech language where she studied in Prague. Ms. Coffland was a prize winning finalist in the both the 2013 and 2010 Irene Dalis Competitions and the East Bay Opera League Competition.

An intrepid student of chamber repertoire, Ms. Coffland enjoys combining hand selected lesser known and new works with classics to create enchanting recitals which have captivated audiences in California, Massachusetts, Missouri, Kansas, Idaho and New York. As a soloist, she has performed in prestigious venues such as Lincoln Center's Alice Tully Hall and Boston's historic Jordan Hall.

Performances for the 2013 season have Ms. Coffland singing Flora in La Traviata with Livermore Opera, the mezzo soloist in Mozart's Coronation Mass with the Sacramento Philharmonic, the title role of Carmen in concert with the Diablo Symphony, and a recital in Kansas City, Missouri. www.BetanyCoffland.com

Classical guitarist Aaron Larget-Caplan is that rare musician that can deliver both virtuosic fireworks and poetic reflection, often integrated into a single interpretation. G. Acosta of the Washington Post writes, "Aaron is a unique talent not to be missed."

Born in Oklahoma and raised in Colorado Aaron Larget-Caplan is the founder of the New Lullaby Project, ¡Con Fuego! a Spanish music and flamenco dance ensemble, and Greater Boston House Concerts. His performances have been called "a treasure" by the Washington Post, and "Stunning!" by Fanfare Magazine.

Recent performances include St. Petersburg, Russia, Sicily and Mantova, Italy, Oregon and Northern California as a soloist and chamber musician. He has premiered over 50 new compositions and released two solo albums: New Lullaby (2010) and Tracing a Wheel on Water (2006). He can also be heard on Vientos  Music of Hayg Boyadjian on Albany Records (2010) and with the New England String Quartet for the premiere recording of Thomas L. Read's 'Capricci', written for and dedicated to Aaron, on Perceptions Navona Records (2013).

A graduate of the New England Conservatory, Aaron is on faculty at The Boston Conservatory and University Massachusetts Boston. He enjoys espresso and dreaming of hot springs. For more information please visit his website at www.AaronLC.com, www.Facebook.com/AaronLCguitar or @AaronLC
