River people need to get together, especially during the winter. What better opportunity than at the Mississippi River Water Trail Association's January event where you and your friends can meet other paddlers and learn from some great river experts. This year join us in person at the Nation Great River Museum or by Zoom on February 26th. In person is limited to 50 participants.
This year our speakers are anthropologist Jullie Zimmerman, paddler and racer Perry Whitaker, and perennial favorite speaker Bryan Hopkins.
Adventure Speaker:
PERRY WHITAKER will talk about being on a team of 4 that challenged the speed record for paddling the entire Mississippi River in 2021. Perry will talk about the trials and tribulations of attempting to break a world record by paddling the 2300 mile river in under 18 days. Listen to stories of preparations, teamwork, adjustments, efforts and the joy of living in a canoe for over 2 weeks.
Safety Speaker
BRYAN HOPKINS will deliver his talk entitled Jump - Invasive Carp vs Paddlers..
Bryan is an avid big river kayaker and will discuss the impacts of invasive Asian Carp on recreational paddling and the river's ecosystems as a whole. He will explain the history of the carp introductions and the various types of carp species that have been introduced into North American waterways. Efforts to control invasive carp will be discussed as well as tips for paddlers in regard to these large fish that are now endemic in most of the large rivers in the Midwest.
Community, History and Perspective Speaker:
JULIE ZIMMERMAN will discuss Stories and Storytelling in the Creation of Cahokia
Cahokia was the capital of a Native American theater state, which attracted pilgrims and immigrants. Cahokians created their world through stories, but it was through hero stories that they grew their authority in distant lands. Art and other aspect of their lives are also discussed.
