In an effort to preserve the tradition of the classic jazz and pop piano trio, the In the Tradition piano trio presents this year-long series of monthly concerts to benefit the programs of Piedmont Center for the Arts. CDs available for purchase!

We are Bill, Rich, and Anthony, a jazz and pop piano trio dedicated to preserving the tradition of the classic jazz piano trio: the music of the Oscar Peterson Trio, the Red Garland Trio, the Wynton Kelly Trio, the Gene Harris Trio, etc. This musical format developed during the modern jazz era of the 1940s and 1950s. It flourished in Oakland and the East Bay during the 1950s with local jazz piano trios, but has since almost disappeared. Recall that legendary jazz pianist Dave Brubeck, an East Bay native, rose to fame at The Burma Lounge nightclub in Oakland, where he played with the Dave Brubeck Trio from 1948 to 1950. To our knowledge, we are the last classic jazz piano trio  -- piano, bass, and drums -- still active in the East Bay.

We are also dedicated to preserving the tradition of "pop piano." Not too many decades ago, almost all the hotels and most fine restaurants and clubs in the East Bay had a pianist playing the great pop tunes of the day and the classics (standards) from the Great American songbook. Unfortunately, this tradition of "pop piano" has also largely vanished.

In the Tradition Piano Trio Musicians' Bios:

Bill Jackman has been our pianist for the past 27 years. He was a student of the late Oakland jazz pianist Art Fletcher, who for several decades presided over the grand piano, usually with Ruth Davies on bass, at the former Solomon Grundys (now Skates) on the Berkeley Marina. Bill is a Lupita Records recording artist who has recorded six CDs in the piano trio format.  He is also an accomplished dancer, and Bill and his late wife Lupita made a dance video entitled Dancing to Jazz in which they danced to their own jazz piano trio music (www.LupitaRecords.com).

Bassist Rich Trevor grew up in Chicago where he was steeped in the blues. He played blues and R&B with many groups there, some now in the Blues Hall of Fame. After college at University of Illinois Champaign-Urbana, Rich came west to Oakland over 40 years ago to play blues, rock and jazz and to work in tech. He became the bassist for the house band at Elis Mile High Club in Oakland (originally a blues club and record label). While there, he backed up the likes of Jimmy McCracklin (West Coast Blues, Jump Blues and R&B) and Lowell Fulson (West Coast Blues, in the Blues Hall of Fame).
After adding the acoustic upright base to his musical skills, Rich got involved in jazz, French café music, and classical music. He is a bassist with the Prometheus Symphony Orchestra of Oakland. Rich performs monthly with this Piano Trio and also still picks up rhythm and blues gigs occasionally.

Anthony Pegram has been a drummer for jazz combos, R&B groups and big bands in the Bay Area for over 40 years. He has accompanied such local talent as singers Maxine Glover, Denise Perrier and Kenny Washington. He was the drummer for the Brommels, a R&B group with roots in the 70's. He anchored the drummer`s chair for bands including the San Francisco All Stars Big Band, the Count Basie Tribute Orchestra, City Swing, and community college bands. Most recently, he accompanied singer Marcella Hooks along with pianist Rodney Burge serving for over 13 years as the house trio for the Sunday Jazz Brunch at Scott`s Restaurant in Oakland`s Jack London Square.
