MUDCRAFT: A Gobble-Berry Farmstead Gathering
Gobble-Berry Farmstead
Amelia, VA
Partager cet événement :

Get down and dirty with the most primal of human building materials: mud! Or, more specifically, clay soil. This hands-on experience will show you the timelessness of basic natural elements and their appropriate use in modern building.

At Mudcraft we will demonstrate the simple and practical style of cordwood construction that we use for outbuildings on our farm, and then will work together to construct the three cordwood walls of the future outdoor kitchen of Gobble-Berry Farmstead - just like a traditional barn raising! The speed of construction and the extremely low cost of materials makes this a useful method even in our modern age of dimensional lumber, and therefore a valuable skill to learn.

A hot lunch of soup, salad, and sourdough bread will be provided! We will have water and herbal teas available as well, but please feel free to bring snacks and extra drinks for yourself if you feel you will need more than this. Traveling musician, Heavy Meadow, will be performing high vibe songs of Earth and Spirit as we gather in appreciation and celebration of our natural surroundings!

A post-lunch plant walk will be led by traveling teacher, plant wizard, and permaculture educator, Eric Joseph Lewis. By the end of this plant walk you will be able to identify several species of wild edible plants, know how to differentiate them from any dangerous lookalikes, and be inspired to grow in your relationship to plants and foraging.

Finally, Elisha Somerville will enlighten us on the how and why of making Bio-Char in a hands-on demonstration of Gobble-Berrys DIY flame-capped kiln. Biochar (charcoal used in a biological system) is a simple material with exciting potential for soil health and permanent carbon sequestration. Youll learn the basic science behind why biochar works and how it is made, and more importantly, youll experience how to do it.

Schedule of events:
- 10 am Cordwood Building 101 with Elisha Somerville
- l2 pm lunch time and live music by Heavy Meadow
- 1:30 pm Plant Walk with Eric Joseph Lewis
- 2:30 Bio-char Made Simple with Elisha Somerville

Space is limited!

Dress for mud! This is a hands-on learning experience with the method of cordwood building; expect that you will get muddy, and plan to have fun! A washing station will be provided.

While on the farm, please be respectful and aware of your surroundings. Please do not climb fences, and be mindful of the many young trees on the property.
