Performers:

Nina Berman, soprano

New York-based soprano Nina Berman has performed in a variety of settings, from vocal improvisation to opera, with a particular focus on chamber music and art song. Recent projects include a recording the complete soprano-piano works of Milton Babbitt with pianist Steve Beck, slated for release in 2022. Nina has sung numerous premieres, and has sung both standard and new repertoire live on WQXR, WNBC, and WHTZ. Additionally, Nina has focused on early music and common practice concert repertoire, singing as soloist with the Vancouver Early Music Festival and the Chappaqua Symphony Orchestra, and as a chorister with the Bard Festival Chorale, the St. Bartholomews Choir, the American Classical Orchestra Choir, the New York Oratorio Society, and Kent Tritles Venture(NY). She has performed as soloist and chamber musician at the citys major venues, including Carnegie Halls Weill Hall, Alice Tully Hall, B.B. Kings Blues Club, The Iridium, New York Citys Town Hall, Brooklyns Roulette, The Cutting Room, and SubCulture, as well as in numerous tristate area concert series, most often in collaboration with pianist Steve Beck. Nina also sings as member of Andrew McKenna Lees progressive, neo-psychedelic ensemble The Knells, whose recordings have been lauded by The New Yorker, The New York Times, The Daily Beast, The New Republic, The Washington Post, and many others. Nina holds both a Bachelors and Masters of Music from the Manhattan School of Music, and a Doctorate of Musical Arts from the CUNY Graduate Center. Please visit www.ninabermansoprano.com for more.

Oliver Markson, piano

With engagements in Japan, China, Mexico, Brazil, Europe, Thailand and the United States, Oliver Markson is establishing himself internationally as a concert pianist, composer and lecturer. Recent performances include the Tchaikovsky 1st Concerto and Grieg Concerto with the Carlos Chávez Orchestra in Mexico City and the Beethoven Triple Concerto with the Querétaro Philharmonic Orchestra in Querétaro; solo recitals in New York, London and Shanghai; vocal recitals with sopranos Monica Harte, Nina Berman and Kristi Bryson; and violin/piano recital tours with Mayumi Fujikawa in England and Japan, leading to CD releases under the Japanese label Mittenwald in 2009 and 2011. Oliver Marksons recent compositions such as Haiku, Firebird, Evocation and Visions 1 and 2 reflect his European/Japanese roots blending French Impressionism with traditional Japanese elements. His Hymn for String Orchestra (2020) is scheduled to be published in the UK under Toccata Classics. His doctoral dissertation on the music of Russian composer Nikolai Medtner was supervised by musicologist Richard Kramer. This paved the way to a final doctoral recital at the CUNY Graduate Center, following the tradition of the composers own performances in consisting entirely of Medtner's songs and solo piano works. He has since lectured on Medtners philosophy on the relationship between subject matter and content, intellect and intuition. Oliver Markson is a faculty member at the Bronx Community College CUNY where he gives classes consisting of music history, music theory and music philosophy as well as piano classes. He has been a judge in the 2018, 2019 and 2020 Tokyo Piano Competitions, in which he also gave public piano masterclasses. www.olivermarkson.com
