A partnership between Black Mountain College Museum + Arts Center and Lake Eden Preserve
This approximately 90 minute tour will cover the historic lower campus buildings including The Dining Hall, Lodges, The Quiet House, and The Studies Building as well as the iconic and recently conserved frescos painted by Jean Charlot and BMC students in the summer of 1944.
Black Mountain College was founded in 1933 as a radical experiment in education and community. In May 1941, following the end of their lease at the original BMC location at the Blue Ridge Assembly, the College moved its operations to Lake Eden, where it remained until its closing in 1957. This location saw the rise of the iconic Summer Institutes, the flourishing of the architecture and work program, and became a site of experimentation that indelibly impacted the world of arts, culture, education, and craft.
The cost is $15/person, free for kids 16 and under. Groups of 5 or more please inquire about a group rate (info@blackmountaincollege.org). Payment must be made in advance to reserve a spot. Limited to 20 participants. Planning ahead? Get in touch for more information on upcoming tour dates.
Accessibility: Before purchase, please get in contact with us at info@blackmountaincollege.org with any accessibility or accommodation questions or concerns. The tour is held across uneven terrain, grass, occasional mud, and gravel. Some areas are only accessible via stairs. The full tour will cover just under 0.6 miles, looping from the lower parking area to the Studies Building and back. We are happy to coordinate with you to ensure the best visit possible!
