Energizing Entire Building Envelope  Innovations in Building Integrated Solar

Presented By:

Morgan Solar Inc.

Description:

This seminar will begin with some of the limitations of conventional solar for large buildings, which often have limited rooftop space compared to their overall size and energy needs. Challenges with deploying solar over facades, windows and on other building features and accessories will be discussed. This will include some time devoted to the challenges in modelling and predicting performance for non-standard solar, and some of the research and innovations that are being developed. The talk will conclude with an overview of the current technology offerings for building Integrated Photovoltaics.

Learning Objectives:

1. Discussion of building energy needs compared to rooftop capacity for conventional solar panels. Conventional PV is an exceptional technology, but especially on tall buildings, the amount of available rooftop space is insufficient to significantly offset building energy needs.

2. Technical, practical, aesthetic, installation, cost and performance challenges for expanding solar deployment beyond the rooftop, to capture generation potential of facades, glazing, building accessories and other areas.

3. Challenges in modeling and predicting performance, as well as challenges in predicting the performance of non-standard solar energy technologies such as solar windows, solar cladding products etc. This section will include some research Morgan Solar is currently carrying out and will include a software demonstration. This is not a sales pitch, as this software is not commercial, and will be in the context of outlining some of the challenges faced by the industry. Note that Morgan Solar may pursue commercialization of a version of this software in the future. Software demonstration will be between 3-4 minutes and used to illustrate a concept not to promote the software.

4. Overview of current BIPV technologies including:
Solar window products
Building cladding products
Building Accessory products
Solar Shading products
Solar Blinds
