Chuckanut Radio Hour with Special Guest Fred Moody, Unspeakable Joy

Join us for a special episode of the Chuckanut Radio Hour, hosted at the Heiner Theater of Whatcom Community College. Our special guest for our November show is Bellingham-native Fred Moody for his book Unspeakable Joy. The memoir of a lapsed Catholic ex-seminarian who bore unwitting witness to the beginnings of decades-long, rampant, serial sexual abuse by Catholic priests of the young seminarians trapped in their care, Unspeakable Joy explores the uniquely Catholic landscape of denial, ignorance, repression, and reverence that allowed priests to abuse children throughout the latter half of the twentieth century with no danger of detection.

Fred Moody grew up in Bellingham and attended Assumption School before leaving for the seminary after finishing eighth grade. Following his expulsion from the seminary, he attended and graduated from Fairhaven College, then went on to a career as a writer in Seattle. He is the author of four previous books, including I Sing the Body Electronic: A Year with Microsoft on the Multimedia Frontier and Seattle and the Demons of Ambition: A Love Story. He lives on Bainbridge Island, Washington, and still comes to Bellingham often, to visit his sainted mother.

Our musical guests for the November show are Walt Burkett and Darla Bradshaw Lobb. The Chuckanut Radio Hour, a recipient of Bellingham's prestigious Mayor's Arts Award, is a radio variety show that began in January 2007. Each Chuckanut Radio Hour features a guest author and includes guest musicians, performance poet Kevin Murphy, Cascadia Weekly columnist Alan Rhodes, an episode of "The Bellingham Bean" serial radio comedy, and some groaner jokes by hosts Chuck & Dee Robinson and announcer Rich Donnelly. The Chuckanut Radio Hour's first guest was Erik Larson and has since included Alexander McCall Smith, Elizabeth George, Cheryl Strayed, Sherman Alexie, Tom Robbins, and Garrison Keillor, among many others. The Radio Hour airs every Saturday evening at 6pm and Sunday at 9pm on SPARK RADIO, KMRE 102.3FM. Tickets for the Chuckanut Radio Hour are $5 and are available at Village Books and online. Doors open at 6:30pm, and you must be seated by 6:45pm as the show begins promptly at 7pm.
