SEEDArts presents the final event of its 2013 Arts Gumbo Series, Brass Bands Around the World, on Saturday, November 9 featuring Banda La Mejor, big band brass-infused traditional music of Mexico. Comprised of musicians from the states of Jalisco, Nayarit, Michoacan, Guanajuato & Zacatecas, Banda La Mejor includes popular Mexican rhythms like cumbia, corrido and bolero. Listen for the unique sounds of the tambora (a type of sousaphone) enforcing the bass note and rhythmic undertone.
Arts Gumbo takes place at the Rainier Valley Cultural Center, 3515 S. Alaska St. Seattle from 6-9 pm and will include a Banda Dance Workshop and a Mexican dinner.
At 7:30pm, Arts Gumbo will offer audiences a Mexican dinner prepared by Community Kitchens Northwest and local volunteers earlier that day. The free Mexican cooking workshop will be offered at 2pm at the Rainier Community Center, 4600 38th Ave S. Seattle, 98118. Participants will cook with a guest Mexican chef & Community Kitchens. Tickets for Arts Gumbo 2013 can be purchased for $15 general; $10 seniors and youth (13-18); $5 for children 5-12; (under 5 free) at the door or at http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/418198. Tickets include the performance, the dance workshop and a complete Mexican dinner.
In a new partnership with the Columbia Branch of The Seattle Public Library, Arts Gumbo is offering free Arts Gumbo Book Chats for each event. The book Like Water for Chocolate by Laura Esquivel will be available for checkout in October. Readers can attend a discussion about the book on Thursday, November 7th, at 6:30pm at the Columbia Branch Library, 4721 Rainier Ave. So.
