Christine Lavin and The Mistletones
Arena Theater proudly presents a holiday performance by Christine Lavin and The Mistletones. The Gualala Arts Chorus, directed by Renata Yardumian, will appear with Lavin as The Mistletones.
Christine Lavin is a singer, songwriter, and promoter of contemporary folk music celebrated for her sense of humor, which is expressed in both her music and her onstage performances. Many of her songs alternate between emotional reflections and outright comedy. Two of her best known songs are "Sensitive New Age Guys" and "Bald Headed Men". She has recorded numerous solo albums, and has also recorded with other female folk artists under the name Four Bitchin’; Babes.
The holiday performance, appropriate for all ages, will feature songs from Lavin’;s album The Runaway Christmas Tree, as well as seasonal music from the repertoire of The Gualala Arts Chorus.
Lavin is known for playful additions to her performances. She hosts a knitting circle before her performance which is open to anyone with tickets to the show and a “;knitting pass”; available on her website www.christinelavin.com. In her youth, Lavin was a cheerleader and she still has impressive baton-twirling skills; she often ends a concert by twirling a glow-in-the-dark baton with the house lights turned off as she leaves the stage.
Lavin’;s latest album is her 2007, Happydance Of The Xenophobe, a topical, political, 13-song collection, that likely thrills the National Weather Service (“;Here Comes Hurricane Season”;), delights Julia Child devotees (“;Whipped Cream”;), enraptures caffeine addicts (“;Chocolate Covered Espresso Beans”;), but irks Priscilla Presley, the NRA, cigarette smokers, and Dick Cheney.
In the fall of 2006 Appleseed Recordings released One Meat Ball, a 19-artist, 96-page CD/cookbooklet produced by Christine Lavin, showcasing music by Dave Van Ronk, Pete Seeger, actor Jeff Daniels, The Accidentals, Grammy-winner Julie Gold, and a dozen other terrific singer/songwriters (and amateur chefs). The reviews have been stellar for both the music and the recipes.
In September 2005 Christine's solo CD, folkZinger, also on Appleseed Records, was released, bringing her number of solo albums to 17, along with three “;Four Bitchin’; Babes”; disks, and seven (counting Meat Ball) compilations produced showcasing the works of dozens of contemporary singer/songwriters whose music she loves.
She has won one NAIRD award, two New York Music Awards, five ASCAP composer awards, the Kate Wolf Memorial Award, and her songs have been performed by such diverse artists as Noel "Paul" Stookey (of Peter, Paul & Mary), Tony Award-winning actress Sutton Foster, the Dartmouth College Decibelles, The Accidentals, and the Washington D.C. Gay Men’;s Chorus. In 2001 Backstage Magazine named her "Outstanding New York Singer/Songwriter Of The Year."
Christine Lavin’;s concert career continues to take her all over the U.S., Canada, and points beyond. She now performs wireless, enabling her, as she says, “;to turn any size concert hall into a living room." When not performing or recording, Christine writes freelance (The Washington Post, Delta "SKY" Magazine, The Performing Songwriter Magazine, The St. Petersburgh Times) is the occasional guest host for the popular "Sunday Breakfast" radio program on WFUV, 90.7 FM in New York City, and now also on xm satellite radio (channel 15), "The Village" (go to xmradio.com for program schedules). In between all this, she knits.
