smARTfilms: Exit Through the Gift Shop

BIMA smARTfilms series fosters community conversation through the merger of visual art, film, and narrative. After the screening, our host and guest(s) will initiate a discussion about the film and its art. All are welcome to participate in an open exchange of ideas during these post-film discussions.

EXIT THROUGH THE GIFT SHOP marks the film debut of notorious street artist Banksy. The documentary's focus is French-born L.A. thrift-shop owner Thierry Guetta, whose apparent compulsion to videotape every moment of his life led him to document the phenomenon of contemporary street art. Banksy is a graffiti artist with a global reputation whose work can be seen on walls from post-hurricane New Orleans to the separation barrier on the Palestinian West Bank. He fiercely guards his anonymity to avoid prosecution. EXIT includes footage of Banksy, Shepard Fairey (who later created the iconic Barack Obama campaign poster), Invader and many of the world's most infamous graffiti artists at work, on walls and in interviews. With a mid-film plot twist and a surprise art auction, EXIT will have the audience reflecting on their own perceptions about art and its value. Unrated (probably R for language) - 87 minutes followed by a hosted discussion about the film and its art.
