BIMA smARTfilms series fosters community conversation through the merger of visual art, film, and narrative. After the screening, our host and guest(s) will initiate a discussion about the film and its art. All are welcome to participate in an open exchange of ideas during these post-film discussions.
FRIDA chronicles the life that Frida Kahlo shared unflinchingly and openly with Diego Rivera, as the young couple took the art world by storm. From the accident which nearly took her life, to her complex and enduring relationship with her mentor and husband, to her illicit and controversial affair with Leon Trotsky, to her provocative and romantic entanglements with women, Frida Kahlo lived a bold and uncompromising life as a political, sexual, and artistic revolutionary. Exquisite cinematography and set design, a lively score, and original artistic flourishes by Director Julie Taymor take FRIDA from an interesting bio-pic to breathtaking visual splendor. Stars Salma Hayek, Alfred Molina & Geoffrey Rush. Rated R - 123 minutes followed by a hosted discussion about the film and its art.
