The AIA Orange County - Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Committee Presents: Unearthing Black Aesthetic
The AIA Orange County - Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Committee is putting together a series of events designed to celebrate and showcase the history and design contributions made by our communities of color. This event will be hosted in zoom and will be available to AIA members and non-members!

The importance of diversity and inclusion are crucial in our growth as designers and we actively want to promote and showcase Black Americas architectural talent and contribution over the decades starting with a presentation by Architecture graduate Demar Mathews. The presentation is titled Discovering Black Aesthetics in Architecture.

In this presentation, he explores the cultural identity of the black built environment and architecture. America is a land of immigrants, and every culture that immigrated has kept elements of their architectural values intact. The black community has evolved differently, beginning with no rights to own property until  the year 1942.

Demar will share his extensive research of the effects of this inequality in the built environment, and the start of the development of a black aesthetic in architecture.

Please join us to take a moment to educate and appreciate Black history and its influences in the American Architectural community

Presenter:
Demar Matthew is a Los Angeles based architectural designer,theorist, and writer. Demar is the founder and Principal of Off Top Design. He also works with A+D Architecture + Design Museum in Los Angeles as curator/exhibitions associate. Born in Moreno Valley, CA, Demar received his Bachelors from HBCU Lincoln University of PA, and completed his Masters of architecture at Woodbury University where he was awarded the Graduate Th esis Prize for his project Black Architecture: Unearthing the Black Aesthetic. His introduction to the fi eld was through his article A Black Architecture Education Experience on archinect. Demar believes architecture and good design should not only be for the privileged. Every community deserves to be proud of the built environment around them, and the built environment around them should be based on the cultures of the people who live there; regardless of income, race, and gender.
