Arts Gumbo 2013: Brass Bands Around The World
Rainier Valley Cultural Center
Seattle, WA
Partager cet événement :

SEEDArts presents the second event of its 2013 Arts Gumbo Series, Brass Bands Around the World, on Saturday, October 12 featuring Drόmeno, a unique brass and folk band playing rhythms from all over Greece and the Balkans. Led by Christos Govetas and Ruth Hunter, long-time musicians in the Balkan music scene, the group includes both of their kids (Eleni and Bobby Govetas), as well as Nikos Maroussis and Peter Lippman. Don't let the young ages fool you- these guys are as hard-hitting as it gets, performing the versatile brass sounds of Macedonia, sonorous clarinet and vocal interplay from Ipiros and Albania, strident zournas and daouli, and energetic Thracian dance tunes. Arts Gumbo takes place at the Rainier Valley Cultural Center from 6-9 pm and will include a Balkan Dance Workshop and a Greek dinner. Ticket prices include the performance, the dance workshop and the dinner.

The Balkan Dance Workshop will take place immediately after the performance and will be led by Yvonne Hunt. Yvonne Hunt has been teaching Greek dances for more than 30 years. She established the dance program at St. Demetrios Church in Seattle in 1974 and is director of the "Paniyiri" dance group.  She is also a published author and researcher on Greek culture. All ages can participate.

At 7:30pm, Arts Gumbo will offer audiences a Greek dinner prepared by Community Kitchens Northwest and local volunteers. A free workshop on Greek/Balkan cooking will be offered at 2pm on Saturday, October 12. Participants will cook with Guest Ruth Hunter & Community Kitchens NW at the commercial kitchen at the Rainier Community Center, 4600 38th Ave S. Ruth Hunter had a long career in food, including that of a pastry chef, bread baker and caterer; she learned traditional Greek cooking from her mother-in-law.
