Assembly Line of Broken Hearts" Film Q&A
"Assembly Line of Broken Hearts" - 7-minute experimental film - Exploring themes of inequality this experimental short film uses a variety of techniques to represent the emotional stages of discrimination.

Soft Cage Films company member JC Farris will join us for a virtual Q&A on July 23rd at 6:30pm CT. Local activist Troi Valles will moderate a discussion with JC and actor/artist Mari DeOleo before taking questions from the community.

Registration is on a sliding scale (donations encouraged) but limited to 200 people! Once registered, you will receive a link to the full film (active from July 15-23) and an invite to the Q&A Zoom event on July 23rd.

"Assembly Line of Broken Hearts" is a short experimental film that seeks to induce a sense of uneasiness in its audience by playing with various techniques to create an isolating and solitary feel. The core structure of the film represents an emotional arc for the stages of discrimination. It uses projection filling every inch of the actors body and background, enveloping the space with a suffocating atmosphere. Another element is a womxns body being touched (unwelcomed) by hands to offer observations about consent. All of these types of techniques are about having the viewer feel a specific emotion and, at times, perhaps not completely understand why. That is where my obsession lies. It does not try to offer a linear story that unfolds in the space of the mainstream narrative, yet makes a conscious effort to use the materials of cinema in a way that calls attention to the medium with the camera being the ever-present silent narrator and at some points the perpetrator or accomplice.

Director Statement
I made this film as a response to my own experiences with discrimination and from hearing numerous others stories. I needed a way to express the things I was feeling and found this to be a productive outlet for examining those emotions artistically and visually. As filmmakers, holding up that mirror to the broken pieces of our society is an essential element to what we do. I am interested in creating art that sparks an emotional reaction and that generates a dialogue after the final frame. With experimental film, we have the freedom to play with techniques to create those emotions that leave interpretation open to the audience, which is something I welcome and enjoy.
