Kris Delmhorst

Kris Delmhorst is an American songwriter, singer, poet, and instrumentalist, (guitar, fiddle, cello, viola, organ, piano, bass, mandolin, and Ukulele (YOO-k-LAY-lee). She has released six full length records on the respected indie label Signature Sounds, as well as a panoply of EPs, side projects, and collaborations. A wide-ranging, eclectic artist, her recordings have included intimate acoustic sets, rock band renderings, home-recording landscapes collaged from found and unexpected sounds, and works of classic poetry refigured and set to music - not to mention an all-acoustic collection of covers of songs by new-wave masters The Cars.

A constant collaborator, Delmhorst has appeared on vocals, cello, and fiddle on records and stages with fellow songwriters Anais Mitchell, Lori McKenna, Chris Smither, Mary Gauthier, Erin McKeown, Winterpills, Peter Mulvey, Gregory Alan Isakov, and many more.

Delmhorst's newest album, THE WILD (Oct 2017), was co-produced with her husband, songwriter Jeffrey Foucault, and features a band drawn from players they share long history with as bandmates and friends, the album merges Delmhorst's sophisticated melodies and hauntingly open voice with Foucault's lean aesthetic to deliver a darkly hopeful, fiercely wise new collection of songs.

I burned my eyes on the moon last nightI was looking for a reason to shineReaching out past my second bodyReaching out past my mindInto the darkness, into the darknessInto the darkness of what we dont knowInto the place behind the place we never go

LULA WILES
www.lulawiles.com

Lula Wiles is a trio rooted in traditional folk music, but equally devoted to modern songcraft providing the perfect blend of modern and timeless. Their songs span from heartbreak-drenched acoustic ballads to honky-tonk swagger, contemporary grit and back again. Their three-part vocal harmonies and fiercely honest lyrics evoke vivid images of everyday life and faraway places. Drawing from deep wells of traditional old-time music, classic country and contemporary indie-folk-rock songwriting and arranging, Lula Wiles melds diverse influences to create a sound all their own.

The three band members deftly swap instruments and frontwoman duties, with Ellie Buckland (vocals, guitar, fiddle), Isa Burke (vocals, guitar, fiddle) and Mali Obomsawin (vocal, bass) each contributing their own singularly expressive vocals, instrumental lines and songwriting. On stage, the band provides a tight, spirited and emotionally resonant live show.

Lula Wiles came of age in Boston, in the practice rooms of Berklee College of Music and the citys lively roots scene. In 2016, the band self-released Lula Wiles, a sensitive, twang-tinged collection of originals. Since then, they have toured internationally, winning fans at the Newport Folk Festival and the Philadelphia Folk Festival, and sharing stages with the likes of Aoife ODonovan, the Wood Brothers, and Tim OBrien.

Now, the release of What Will We Do on Smithsonian Folkways Recordings places the group squarely in line with some of its deepest influences, from the protest anthems of Woody Guthrie to the trailblazing songs of Elizabeth Cotten and Hazel Dickens. (Even the bands name is a twist on an old Carter Family song.)

Lula Wiles are provocateurs of the best kind, rabble-rousers with the purest intentions. One of the brightest recent signees to Smithsonian Folkways, [] it seems like theyre hellbent on stirring up folk conventions for the better. When Lula Wiles performs, the trios many years of friendship are clear from their effervescent vocal blend and electrifying musical chemistry.
