Our Distinguished Speaker: Candace Bever, Ph.D.-
ARS Research Microbiologist Foodborne Toxin Detection and Prevention Research Unit USDA

A simple, portable test that can detect the deadliest mushroom poison in minutes has been developed by Agricultural Research Service scientists at the USDA. The new test is an antibody-based assay, similar to a pregnancy test. This test specifically binds deadly amanitins, toxins produced by some wild mushrooms. The test is completed in 10 minutes and can detect amanitins either from mushroom samples or from urine of an intoxicated person or dog. In this talk, Candace will describe how the test was made, how it works, and show examples of using it with mushrooms and urine samples.

Candace Bever received her B.S. in biological sciences from Carnegie Mellon University and earned her Ph.D. in marine science from the Virginia Institute of Marine Science at the College of William & Mary. She completed a post-doc and served as a Project Scientist at UC Davis before joining the USDA.

The event is a seminar-style presentation followed by a Q&A.
