Trumpet Summit @ The Dance Hall
On September 21st, local trumpeter and all around advocate of collaborative sound, Chris Klaxton will showcase an evening of music at The Dance Hall in Kittery set to blur boundary lines, and bridge the gap between the Seacoast and the City.
The evening continues the focus of presenting great music at the Dance Hall in Kittery, Maine a non-profit dance, music and performing arts venue that has hosted acclaimed musicians The Fringe, Debo Band and Francine Reed among many others.
Klaxton, who along with performing in his own group, is bringing up esteemed, award-winning trumpeter, Jason Palmer from Boston, to share the evening's bill. The inherent idea behind the production is to bridge the gap between the immense jazz talent found in the Seacoast scene with that of players in renowned city scenes from Boston, New York, and abroad.
"I'm very excited for this show," said Klaxton. "Jason Palmer is perhaps the baddest trumpet player out there and leading the charge for the younger generation. In regards to that generation, it should be noted that there are so many fine players present in the Seacoast that would find a home in any of the bigger scenes worldwide, but have found comfort in the Granite State. So, why not showcase that by bringing up one of the best Boston has to offer, to play with some of us on our home turf? Basically, all we're looking to do is open up the eyes and ears of the community, and to expand listenership and the camaraderie that exists here. All are welcome, they just need to be the ones that find their way through the door. It's always open The Dance Hall has given me the opportunity to present world-class music in their space, and I couldn't be more humbled. From the ambient, visually pleasing Hall itself, to the strides they're trying to make to update their systems to be able to present exciting musical talent this is a win-win for all parties involved."
Klaxton, who has only recently returned to New Hampshire after earning his Master of Music degree in Jazz Trumpet from the University of Miami, has studied under the likes of legendary trumpeters Dr. Clark Terry, Terence Blanchard, and Dave Douglass, among others. His group for the evening includes: Eric Von Oeyen (Drums), Mike Effenberger (Rhodes), Andy Greene (Guitar), Nick Mainella (Saxophone), Taylor O'Donnell (Vocals), and Rob Gerry (Bass).
Palmer has worked with icons such as Roy Haynes, Herbie Hancock, Jimmy Smith (the organist), Wynton Marsalis and the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, Kurt Rosenwinkel (first trumpeter ever hired by this highly acclaimed guitarist), Ravi Coltrane, Kenny Barron, Common (hip-hop icon), and others. He took 1st Place ($10,000 prize) in the 2009 Carmine Caruso International Jazz Trumpet Solo Competition. The June 2007 issue of Downbeat Magazine cited Jason as one of the "Top 25 trumpeters of the Future". His group for the evening includes: Luke Marantz (Keys), Dan Carpel (Bass), and Lee Fish (Drums).
The name of the game is showcasing elements from existing scenes that co-exist in a much broader sense.
Tickets are $10 in advance and $15 at the door.
