Pathways to Publication Workshop with Jonathan Haupt
Pathways to Publication
With Pat Conroy Literary Center Executive Director Jonathan Haupt
Saturday, May 2, 10:00-11:30 a.m. | Online via Zoom
Limited to 15 participants

This 90-minute online workshop for writers at all levels of experience offers an overview of how best to identify and utilize directories of vetted opportunities for publication (agents, publishers, contests, and journals) with an emphasis on pathways into small independent presses. From traditional models to self-publishing to hybrid, myriad opportunities for publication now exist for writers, but finding legitimate paths to publication can be a challenge for many burgeoning writers. This workshop will also offer some writing exercises to help participants self-evaluate their writing ambitions and decide which pathways are best for them.

By way of introduction to the topic, this session will also include a brief discussion (both instructive and hilariously cautionary) of how Pat Conroy's first two books, The Boo and The Water Is Wide, came to be published.

A PDF of workshop materials will be emailed to participants before the class meets. Screen Share will be used during the workshop, so participants will need to join from a device with video and audio capabilities.

ABOUT OUR INSTRUCTOR
Jonathan Haupt is the executive director of the Pat Conroy Literary Center and the former director of the University of South Carolina Press, where he created the Story River Books fiction imprint with Conroy, named by Garden & Gun Magazine as one of "the top ten things to love about the South." Jonathan's book reviews and author interviews have appeared in the Charleston Post and Courier, Beaufort Lowcountry Weekly, Beaufort Lifestyle magazine, Savannah Morning News Beacon magazine, Pink magazine, and Southern Writers Magazines Suite T blog. He is co-editor with Nicole Seitz of the award-winning anthology Our Prince of Scribes: Writers Remember Pat Conroy. Jonathan also serves on the boards of the South Carolina Academy of Authors and the Friends of South Carolina Libraries and on the advisory board of the South Carolina Humanities and the affiliates steering committee of the American Writers Museum.  Earlier this year, he was recognized with the Doug Marlette Literacy Leadership Award presented by the Pulpwood Queens, the largest book club in the U.S.
