Campers (Spring 2020)

Wolf Trap National Park for the Performing Arts is sponsoring a camp out for 5th & 6th grade first-time or novice campers who may not otherwise have the opportunity to camp or may be under-served. The Fall camp out is scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, May 2-3, 2020.

As a follow up to eleven very successful events in the past sixe years, the Wolf Trap National Parks Service, local Boy Scouts Troop 55 and the Friends of Wolf Trap have enhanced our program designed specifically for 5th and 6th grade boys and girls. This is a unique experience as camping is not usually permitted at the Wolf Trap National Park. We have a special permit to conduct this program. Our intent is to provide youth who do not have extensive camping experience the opportunity to learn to appreciate the great outdoors and gain a sense of independence.

The First Time Campers Program has been recognized as the VolunteerFairfax Youth Program for 2017. This is an opportunity for youth to learn to become comfortable with the outdoors, have fun and build confidence, while not venturing too far from home. This is also a great way for parents to learn to become more comfortable that their child can thrive independently.

The program provides tents for the event for the elementary school campers and local Boy Scout Troop 55 will be lending some troop gear (stoves and Dutch ovens). Scouts will lead a campout program for the participants which will include instructing on camp set up, working with gas camp stoves, cooking & clean up instructions, exploring the beauty of the nature park, conducting community service, participating in camp fire (under special permit) activities such as skits and smores, and completing a back stage tour of the Wolf Trap Performing Arts Filenes Center.

Activities planned for the camp out experience include: archery, fly fishing, bird watching, nature tours, community service, and performances on the local stages.

Enrollment is limited to only 48 participants and we will have over 30 volunteers (Scout/Venture/NPS/Community Youth and Adults) to help administer the program. The Wolf Trap National Park Service is the primary sponsor with the support of the local Boy Scouts and the Friends of Wolf Trap.
