Meet the Duduk: An Introduction to the Fundamentals of Playing this Ancient Armenian Woodwind
Welcome to Bay Area's first ever Duduk fundamentals workshop series! In the first session (of 3 total sessions), participants will be introduced to the history of the Armenian Duduk. This hands-on workshop will focus on breathing, posture, and embouchure, along with a series of warm-up and beginner techniques, culminating in an Armenian tune. The second and third sessions will add on to the first (details forthcoming at the first session). Playing the Duduk can evoke a meditative experience, yet also allow for a beautiful presentation of classical and folk melodies alike. The workshop series honors this ancient woodwind and all musical expressions that come through it.
Khatchadour is a Bay Area-based Duduk musician, and a vocalist of the Armenian and Arabic traditions. He began playing the Duduk in 2006, and his passion for the sacred sound of the woodwind took him to Armenia, Spain and France, to study with the foremost Duduk masters of the world. Khatchadour is a founding member of three Bay Area ensembles: Sayat Nvaq, Saideh & Khatch, and Yeraz. He has released five albums within the world music and meditation genres. He holds Bachelor's degrees in Anthropology & Middle Eastern Studies from the University of California, Berkeley.

Class size is limited to 10 participants. No auditions, prerequisites or music reading required. This a workshop series for beginners. If you have a Duduk and reeds, feel free to bring them. Otherwise, there will be Duduks of various keys/tunings available for use. All are welcome! Please note: the ticket reserves your seat for the first workshop session only. The second and third sessions of the series will have the same pricing as the first, but tickets will be offered after the first workshop.
