Join us on a journey to Schenectady and Rensselaer to explore key sites in New York States Colonial Dutch history.
Our first stop will be the Mabee Farm Historic Site, the oldest farm in NY States Mohawk Valley. Originally a fur trading post in the 1600s, it became the home of the settlers Jan and Annetje Mabee in 1705, when Schenectady was Americas frontier. The farm stayed in family hands until 2005, when it was acquired by the Schenectady County Historical Society. After a guided tour, we will head to Schenectadys historic Stockade District and the Historical Societys Museum & Library, featuring the new exhibition Handcrafted: The Folk and Their Art.
After lunch at a local venue, well head south to Crailo ("crows' wood" in Dutch), once a part of the vast landholding called the Manor, or Patroonship, of Rensselaerswyck. This NY State Historic Site tells the story of the early Dutch inhabitants of the upper Hudson Valley through exhibits highlighting archeological finds from the Albany Fort Orange excavations, special programs, and guided tours of the museum.
