PRESS RELEASE
8th Annual Tuscaloosa Africana Film Festival
Saturday, February 29, 2020
Central High School, Tuscaloosa, AL
6 PM  10:00 PM (Scheduled African movies)
Tuscaloosa will host its 8th Annual Tuscaloosa Africana Film Festival, which is an evening of selected acclaimed movies from the African continent and the broader African Diaspora. This is the 2nd year that the event has been co-sponsored by Central High School.
Regular programming for the film festival will run from 6:00 to 10:00 pm with four critically acclaimed movies from Africa this year.
The program details are as follows:
In French and Swahili with English sub-titles, the first feature is THE MERCY OF THE JUNGLE (91 min) by Joël Karekezi, Belgium/France (2018).
At the outbreak of the Second Congo War, Rwandan soldiers Sergeant Xavier and Private Faustin are sent to hunt down Hutu rebels in the vast jungles of eastern Congo. Xavier is a stoic veteran of the ethnic wars that have plagued his country for years; Faustin is an eager young recruit who joined the army to avenge the death of his father and brothers. Under the relentless command of Major Kayitare, they march 80 kilometers a day in pursuit of the murderers of nearly one million Tutsis during the Rwandan genocide four years earlier. When they are accidentally left behind in the jungle, with only each other to rely on, they embark on an odyssey through one of the most beautiful, yet treacherous forests on earth, faced with the depths of their own war-torn souls.
The first short, Razana, (15 min) is a riveting almost silent film from Madagascar, by Haminiaina Ratovoarivony in Malagasy, (2018) with English sub-titles. The movie is about Solo a Malagasy, Parisian and homosexual. In order to fulfill the last wishes of his deceased partner, Solo returns to Madagascar to meet with his estranged in-laws.

The second feature, directed by Kathryn Fasegha in 2018 is 2 Weeks in Lagos (105 min) is a turbulent and thrilling journey into the lives of Ejikeme and Lola. Their lives collide when Ejikeme an investment banker comes home from the United States with Lola's brother Charlie to invest in Nigerian businesses. The movie captures the excitement, vibrancy and complexity of everyday life in Lagos, the dynamic commercial capital of Nigeria. Anything is possible in 2 weeks.
The final short is enGULFed (2018), a film written by Kojo Owiredu Kissi from Ghana. It is an emotionally driven short film that addresses the subject of modern-day slavery being experienced mostly by young migrants from Sub-Saharan Africa, who embark on perilous journeys in search of greener pastures in Gulf stetes of the Middle East.

The Tuscaloosa Africana Film Festival is presented by the Edward A. Ulzen Memorial Foundation (EAUMF) and Afram South Inc., two non-profit organizations supporting education and public health initiatives in Ghana, West Africa and West Alabama respectively. It is also co-sponsored by The College of Community Health Sciences (CCHS) at UA, The College of Arts & Sciences (UA) and the Tuscaloosa Sister Cities Commission. Tuscaloosa is a sister city of Sunyani Techiman in Ghana.
