Goodnight, Troublemaker

What if the French Enlightenment philosopher Voltaire came into possession of a formula, involving prodigious amounts of coffee, that kept him from dying at age 83? What if he easily escaped the wrath of the Church in the guise of a young woman? What if he (or she) has continued to traverse the centuries, making trouble at every stop along the way, from 18th century France to the Wild West of the old days, from the Chicago Democratic Convention in 1968 to the digital frontiers of the future?
The Sublime Theater begins the new year with the world premiere of "Goodnight, Troublemaker" by Peter Lundblad, directed by Rachel McCrain, starring Carin Metzger, Jenni Robinson, Strother Stingley, and Tippin (as Voltaire). The production plays six performances only, Thursdays-Saturdays at 7:30 P.M., February 13-15 and 20-22, at The BeBe Theatre (20 Commerce Street in downtown Asheville).
Sublime Producing Artistic Director Steven Samuels says, "John [Crutchfield, Associate Artistic Director] and I have been supporters of Peter's for many, many years, in John's case since Peter was a student of his way back when, at App State. I worked with Peter as a writer on many editions of 'The Bernstein Family Christmas Spectacular' and on his first produced play, 'Capital Liars,' in Magnetic Theatre days. 'Goodnight, Troublemaker,' which is as strange, funny, and profound as a play can be, is Peter's most audacious and accomplished script to date, and we're delighted that he's making his Sublime debut with it. We're also thrilled that his old friend and colleague Rachel McCrain, who assistant directed on The Sublimes productions of 'Krapps Last Tape,' 'The Zoo Story,' and 'My Crazy My Love,' is taking the helm on this remarkable theatrical experience. And the cast simply couldn't be better. Having Carin, Jenni, Strother, and Tippin take their first bows on The Sublime stage adds to the excitement of this must-see evening of theater!"
