MAMA JUGGS by Anita Woodley- Theatre In The Dark Gala

Join Raindownus.org for our first annual "Theatre in the Dark" Fundraising Gala in Clayton, North Carolina at the Historic Wagner House for an evening of featuring the award-winning show Mama Juggs, dinner, and current breast cancer/health information.

This non-traditional breast cancer awareness educational tool will enlighten, excite, and entertain you infused with the latest information concerning breast cancer prevention and perseverance through life's struggles.

Inspired by true stories from the playwright's life, Mama Juggs is an intimate performance about women's health, motherhood, and living with breast cancer. Mama Juggs channels the voices of three generations of African-American women within her family as they struggle with bra stuffing, breastfeeding and last stage breast cancer - all in the context of the social and economic adversity of the Oakland projects. Woodley wrestles with these issues through a diversity of theatrical styles, including a cappella negro spirituals, comedy, straight talk, improvisation, and audience interactions. She plays three different characters in Mama Juggs (Grandma Suga Babe, Mable-Ree, and Anita) without the help of costume changes or scene breaks.

"When she's at her peak, it feels like she's channeling these characters, not performing them," said theatre critic Byron Woods of The Independent Weekly. University hosts have also praised Woodley's shows, highlighting their value for students and community members." Indeed, the audience is transfixed by Mama Juggs, as she relays to you the rather vivid and emotional consequences of womanhood; the phenomenology of motherhood; the complex meaning of having breasts," said the coordinator of Student Life & Multicultural Programs at HACC-Gettysburg.

Mama Juggs has been warmly received by audiences across the U.S. Written as a promise to her mother - who died of breast cancer before 50 - it seeks to challenge cultural taboos and stereotypes surrounding breast health and body image. By raising both money and social consciousness, it's designed to contribute to the winnable campaign against breast cancer.
