Winter Talk 2020

The Seventh annual Winter Talk is a three day conversation on the Christian Doctrine of Discovery (DOD) and its influence on Christian theology and polity, with an emphasis on the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) relationship with Indigenous tribes and peoples. Hosted by the Yakama Christian Mission Council, and Phillips Theological Seminary, Winter Talk is dedicated to furthering the conversation on the Christian Doctrine of Discovery and its dismantling.

Winter Talk is an important time for American Indians and non-Indians, to gather and eat, learn, and talk about the impact of the Christian Doctrine of Discovery. This is a space of accountability to American Indians where the Indian voice is the principle voice in an exploration of the past, an understanding of the present, and a visioning of the future.

Jon Ghahate -is this years Winter Talk keynote speaker at Phillips Theological Seminary, Tulsa, OK. Presented by the Center for Indigenous Ministry (DOC) and Yakama Christian Mission, Winter Talk will center on the Doctrine of Discovery and its impact on Pueblo people.

Jon (Laguna & Zuni Pueblo) is the Museum Cultural Educator at the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Jon was born and raised on both Pueblos and began his career as a health care practitioner. He transitioned into education as an effort to assist Native students in the Albuquerque Public School system, working to improve their competencies in STEM; Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. Being a middle and high school educator and athletic coach, Jon also recognized the need for the inclusion of the Native narrative to be incorporated in helping Native students identify with their communities and Indigenous identity. He is a Vietnam Era Veteran, a volunteer in numerous community organizations, and is a parent. Jons work is to give a voice of resilience and authenticity for those who have come before us and our future generations of Pueblo peoples.
