Lessons Learned: The Evolution of Fracture Driven Interactions and
Active Well Defense

Abstract:
Fracture Driven Interactions (FDIs), commonly known as frac hits, are increasingly common events that occur with varying intensity during infill completions in unconventional reservoirs. Given the economic impact of such events on existing wells can be substantial, it is important to investigate and understand potential causes, and where possible, reservoir characteristics in order to mitigate the negative effects of FDIs.
Several technologies are available to help determine reservoir characteristics and track fracture driven interactions during completion operations. One effective and inexpensive method is observing and recording well head surface pressures in both the infill and legacy wells in real time. Using this data FDIs can often be mitigated using a technique known as Active Well Defense (AWD) (SPE 189860, 184851-MS, P. Bommer, M. Bayne et al). During post job analyses the data collected can be combined with stage completion data to analyze the effectiveness of the AWD program and look for completion related FDI drivers. Using examples from the Bakken and Delaware basins well discuss the evolution of AWD and FDI analysis over the past three years.

Mr. Bayne is an Engineering Analytics Manager and Frac Supervisor with Abraxas Petroleum Corporation. He handles day to day data management and analytics for Abraxas engineering department and supervises hydraulic fracturing operations for the company.
