Bus Tour of Farms: Homesteads in the Driftless Area
Village Park
New Glarus, WI
Partager cet événement :

Interested in living closer to the land, cultivating conservation and crafting a greener lifestyle?  Yes, you can!  Take a behind-the-scenes bus tour of three inspiring Soil Sisters farmsteads doing just that.  With a focus on land conservation and sustainability, this guided bus tour will introduce you to a trio of diversified women doing everything from planting prairies to cultivating aronia to raising goats -- all while feeding their families and communities.  Small-scale agriculture will be covered and, of course, opportunity for goat selfies.

Soil Sisters will serve as your guides throughout the tour and on the bus, sharing stories and answering questions about our shared mission to steward our landscape and cultivate community.

Farm fresh snacks and samples provided.

Meet these three New Glarus and Blanchardville area Soil Sisters and take a "behind the scenes" tour of their farms:

Harmony Farm (New Glarus)
Nestled in the valleys of beautiful New Glarus, Harmony Farm is a small woman-owned and operated farm. Brandi is passionate about sustainable agriculture, responsibly raised food, and the joy and health of our animals and the earth.  The farm offers wetlands, restored trout stream, prairie, and a meditation labyrinth.  "We raise pastured meat goats and poultry, and our motto has always been 'Respect and care, from pasture to plate.'"

Barham Gardens (Blanchardville)
After raising commercial cut flowers for 10 years, Barham Gardens transitioned to growing Certified Organic Aronia Berries and their orchard now includes over 1,000 plants.  Aronia is a native Midwest superfruit with the highest antioxidant of any fruit or vegetable and is the basis of a liqueur they sell.  A leading aronia advocate, Roberta served as president of the Midwest Aronia Association. She also weaves handwoven rugs and crafts felted accessories in her loom studio. The Barhams are working on grassland bird habitat development and restoring native Oak Savanna using goats to control undergrowth and recently completed construction of their cordwood masonry home.

Driftless Prairies (Blanchardville)
Driftless Prairies, a 30-year dream, provides a native haven for wildlife. We do this with a simple management plan  nurture and increase native plants, trees, and bushes while decreasing the non-native, invasive plants. Our 60 acres supports over 200 plant species and over 30 natives trees and bush species. Why is this important? As the non-native vegetation replaces the natives, insect diversity dwindles. Insects are the protein source necessary for baby birds, reptiles, amphibians, and small mammals to survive. Marci studies and documents the wildlife (including insects) and plants. Her work also embraces science research and writing that explains the balancing act of ecosystem restoration and its many interconnected parts.
