Thirty-three years ago, Aaron Lansky and a small group of young people set out to save the world's Yiddish books before it was too late. At the time, experts thought there were only 70,000 Yiddish books in all of North America; the nascent Yiddish Book Center recovered that number in six months, and went on to rescue more than one million volumes, most of which would otherwise have been lost forever. What Lansky could not have anticipated, however, were what Grace Paley called the "enormous changes at the last minute" the tectonic shifts of technology and culture that would one day make Yiddish hot and mobilize a new generation of Yiddish readers and activists. In this engaging, wide-ranging talk, Aaron Lansky will recap early adventures and carry the story to the present with a rollicking account of new technologies and the young people who are using them to reclaim the cultural "flip side" of contemporary Jewish life. The Jewish world, says Lansky, may never be the same again.
