As Annamarie fills out the forms in the pediatrician's waiting room she's surprised to see that the questions are about her - not just her brand new baby - and, yes, she does feel "down" and "hopeless" and "irritable". The psychiatrist greeted us with the enthusiasm of a TV host at the top of a long, long flight of stairs. My boyfriend--my ex-boyfriend?--my boyfriend--went up those stairs achingly slowly, and butt-first. He had wrecked himself on ketamine and whippets, and I was hoping the blinding white teeth of the psychiatrist would be the light at the end of the tunnel. But all we won on this game show was a trip to the emergency room--a trip that would eventually save my life.
