The New Deal - Gypsy Jazz - at Beverly Givins Castle
Gypsy jazz (also known as gypsy swing or hot club jazz) is a style of jazz music generally accepted to have been started by the Romani guitarist Jean Django Reinhardt in and around Paris in the 1930s. Because its origins are in France and Django was from the Manouche Roma clan it is often called by the French name, "jazz manouche", or alternatively, "manouche jazz", even in English language sources. The term is now commonly used for this style of music.
Kevin Rush -- Guitar
Kevin Rush began playing guitar at the age of 13. Influenced originally by rock and roll guitar greats at an early age he quickly became aware of other styles: classical with Andres Segovia, blues via BB King, and ultimately jazz with Django Reinhardt and Les Paul. Kevin played in various bands throughout High School and College and majored in Classical Guitar Performance at Roosevelt University in Chicago.
Steve Kelly -- Guitar
Started playing guitar in high school and into college inspired by contemporary rock music eventually he became involved in the Chicago Django scene initially through classes ate The Old Town School of Folk Music and then expanded to the Django in June Festival, resulting in opportunities to perform in Europe, and this last year at the Django Festival in Samois, France.He continues to be deeply involved in the Gypsy jazz community in Chicago playing in several groups as well as hosting house concerts for touring Artists.
Teri Foster -- Clarinet
Kelly studied music at Bowling Green State and DePaul Universities. In her early career, she played with many Chicago area orchestras and classical ensembles as a freelance clarinetist. Teri found her entry point to gypsy swing in 2013 thanks to Chicagos Old Town School of Folk Music, and the Django in June festival held annually in Northampton, MA. She currently plays with several gypsy swing groups in the Chicago community.
Ed Sullivan -- Upright Bass
Ed started his musical life while in high school playing electric bass in rock and blues groups, studying privately with a local jazz artist. He joined the U.S.Army Band and toured Europe, Southeast Asia, and the U.S. as a musical ambassador. In 2000 Ed retired and returned home to Chicago where continues to study and perform music around the city. On the top of a hill, on the far South Side sits an ancient castle. Understandably, because it is the city's only castle, it has long held a special place in the hearts and memories of those who have called the Beverly neighborhood home.
Tickets can be purchased at the door one hour prior to the performance.
