A New and Cost-Effective Approach to Fiber-Optic Well Interventions
Abstract: The presentation will describe how fiber optics can be introduced into wells at very low cost, using a novel, disposable deployment method. The benefits of deploying fiber optics in wells has been demonstrated, but the cost and risk associated with existing installation methods have severely restricted the widespread application of enabling technologies such as distributed fiber-optic sensing and high-bandwidth data communications. The challenge was to find a new way to convey optical fiber in almost any well in a simple, cost-effective manner. The resulting system utilizes bare optical fiber located in a disposable probe. The probe is configured on the wellhead in a small, pressure containing, launcher. The fiber is released during free-fall deployment of the probe into the well. The probe and fiber are then disposed of in the well following sensing and monitoring operations, which typically last several hours to a few days. To date, this novel system has been used to temporarily install fiber in wellbores to collect distributed sensing data, such as distributed temperature sensing (DTS) and distributed acoustic sensing (DAS). In this passive sensing mode a variety of applications have been demonstrated, for example, cement assurance, leak detection, injection monitoring and vertical seismic profiling. This technology has also been expanded to include active elements which provide additional, discrete, electronic sensing functions from within the deployed probe. This capability enables the combination of single point data with distributed sensing information to provide enhanced well intelligence and assist with a wider variety of production logging applications, including evaluating well and reservoir performance and completion effectiveness.
