Arion's fifth season consists of four concerts presented by some of the finest chamber musicians in the New York area: Adrienne Kim (piano), Inessa Zaretsky (piano), William Wei (violin), Emily Popham (violin), Lilit Gampel (violin), Laura Goldberg (violin), Andy Lin (viola), Elizabeth Anderson (cello), Kathe Jarke (cello), and our Music Director Robert La Rue (cello).
All concerts are at Christ and St. Stephen's Church (120 W. 69th St., NYC, between Broadway and Columbus) and start at 8:00pm.
* Friday, November 8th, 2019. Violinist William Wei and pianist Inessa Zaretsky return to join cellist Robert La Rue in a mixed program of duets and piano trios, featuring Beethovens Sonata, Op. 30 No. 3 for violin and piano, Nadia Boulangers Three Pieces for Cello and Piano (1914), and Sergei Rachmaninoffs Trio élégiaque No. 2 in D minor, Op. 9.
* Friday, February 21st, 2020. Quartet 131, a new ensemble, formed since three of its four members appeared together on last seasons Arion series, will perform a program including works by Dvorak and Florence Price, the first African-American woman to have been recognized as a symphonic composer and to have had a composition presented by a major American orchestra. Her Five Folk Songs in Counterpoint for string quartet make a particularly compelling selection for Black History Month. (Lilit Gampel and Laura Goldberg, violins; Andy Lin, viola; Robert La Rue, cello.)
* Friday, March 27th, 2020. Cello trio VC3 returns for its third performance on our series. Elizabeth Anderson, Kathe Järka, and Robert La Rue will present a program featuring the New York premiere of Olli Mustonen's Triptych for three cellos (2014), J.S. Bach's Sonata in G minor, BWV 1029 (originally for viola da gamba and harpsichord ) and works by Bartok and Rossini.
* Wednesday, May 20th, 2020 at 8 pm. The Alcott Trio (Adrienne Kim, piano, Emily Popham, violin, and Robert La Rue, cello) closes another Arion Chamber Music Season with Homage to Musical Patrons, The program pairs the piano trios of Debussy and Tchaikovsky (both of whom benefited from the support of Nadezhda von Meck) and will incude the New York premiere of Canzonet (1984), by local New York composer Alison Nowak.
